An tUitach
This traditional Gleóiteog is one of the few remaining built in 1929 by the Casey Brothers of Mweenish Island, Connemara.
AntUltach has recently been completely refurbished - documented by Watercraft magazine.
These sturdy boats were built for carrying cargo of turf, fish, building materials and provisions to the Islands of Connemara and Galway Bay.
This Gleóiteog has served her time as a fishing vessel.
Rigged in the traditional manner with gaff main, jib on a bowsprit and staysail.
Traditional tan sails made in 2013 by Dara Baily of Connemara.
An tUltach presents a unique opportunity to acquire a totally refurbished example of the beautiful Gleóiteog classic.

Rebuild
Iroko was chosen for the planking as the timber available was well seasoned.
Stem and inner keel replaced.
On checking the ribs it was found they had been fastened through the gunwale with 6 X three eights hand made square nails driven into the end grain of the timbers. Each and every one had been split by 80 years of movement of the boat.
Hardboard templates were made of each rib before cutting from broad iroko planks.
A 6" X 3" iroko piece to make an inner keel which was fastened through the outer keel with 3/8ths stainless steel thread rods.
The transom was made from three pieces of iroko and new gunwales laminated from 2" Douglas fir.
Siberian larch was used for the garboards supplied in 17' lengths which allowed each plank to be made from a single board. These boards were twisted through 90 degrees from vertical at the stem to horizontal amidships.
At this stage the hull was turned upside down and sprayed with wood preservative.
Planking then commenced from the garboards working down to the sheer.
Irish larch from a a nearby forest. Nice straight knot free timber selected from the local saw mill.
Frames were marked top to bottom at 3" intervals and cut a template for each plank from hardboard. Each cut plank fastened using stainless screws countersunk into the planks and then plugged.
With planking complete caulking with cotton payed with marine glue.
Another visit to the sawmills to find a curved branch of oak for the stem - gripe and another suitable piece for the keel.
The benches were made from 2" Douglas fir to reduce the need for brackets and supports.
A local metal fabricator made the custom hardware from hardboard templates.
With all the skill and hard work gone into the boat a wood stain was used. It seemed a shame to cover up the beautiful timbers with black paint !
I never thought the re build would be so complicated and such big job. With professional woodworking machinery operated by skilled craftsmen I could only marvel at the Casey brothers who built "An tUltach" in an open field in Connemara all those years ago.
